In the forthcoming release of iSMARTtrain for the iPad (it’s coming soon, I promise!), we download Garmin data via the Garmin Connect site. However, with the problems of Garmin’s outage over the past few days, I’ve been looking at other ways for getting the data off my Garmin.
In common with most (but not all) iPads, my device has a lightning connector, and there’s no way to directly plug in a USB cable. However, Apple make a camera adaptor, which plugs into the lightning port and has a USB socket along with another lightning port. I’ve used this in the past to connect my camera and to use a mouse with my iPad. Unfortunately, when I connected my Edge 530, I got mixed results. The Garmin showed all indications of being connected to a computer, but the screen showed ‘External Power Lost’. I took this as an indication that the iPad didn’t have enough power for the Garmin. Connecting a lightning cable from a powered hub to lightning port on the camera adaptor fixed this, and the Garmin appeared in the ‘Files’ App. It DOES take some time to appear, though.
Now that the device is connected, how to get the files into iSMARTtrain? Well, you could use the import function, and just navigate to the folder on the device, or you can open the Files app and drag-and-drop the .fit files onto the iSMARTtrain, as shown below.
A couple of caveats: This probably won’t work with some Garmin models like the Forerunner 945 & the Music versions. I don’t have one handy to test with, but I believe these don’t work like a USB drive. Also, the newer iPad Pro models have a USB-C connector instead of a lightning port. You should be able to connect your Garmin directly to these, but I don’t know if these supply enough power to the Garmin for it to work – if not, then you may need to connect through a powered USB hub.
Play a fast-paced, interactive, aiming and accuracy-based matching game where you compete against an opponent in a fierce, one-on-one, match 4, five-minute bubble bursting battle! Orbwars: Mayhem is a highly-challenging, 1 or 2 player matching-based puzzle where you must fire colored orbs into a cluttered game grid, and try to create horizontal and/or vertical groups of 4 or more of the same colored orbs! The catch is that you have an opponent with exactly the same mission on the other side of a split screen, and you must race to outscore him/her on points before the clock runs out!
Reasons to play this high-energy, online matching activity: This is a wild combination of game ideas that fuses one-on-one tactical play, color-based matching, reaction time, accuracy-based shooting, and more! Play against 4 different difficulty levels of computer opponents, or take on a friend, family member or classmate in a competitive one-on-one battle on the same computer!
Strategy to win: Be disciplined, and try to concentrate on your own side of the screen alone! Continually focusing on what your opponent is doing will only slow you down (However, an occasional glance at their points tally is advised!). Your concentration skills, reaction speed, stamina, and determination levels are all vitally important as you try to constantly manage the grid, and eliminate groups of same-colored orbs as quickly as possible.
How to Play: A Flash-based, 1 & 2-player bubble matching game for notebook, laptop and desktop PC / Mac (with certain browsers). There are 3 game modes to choose from: Arcade Mode, Vs COM (computer) Mode (which are both 1 Player), and 2 Player Mode. The goal and game play is the same in all modes – you must try to outscore your opponent in points before the 5 minute clock runs out. In order to score points, you must fire orbs into the grid, and create matching groups of 4 or more same-colored orbs that are adjacent to each other, horizontally or vertically. When you create a matching group, these orbs are eliminated from the play area, and you score points toward your total.
In the 1 Player Modes, you play on the left hand side of the split screen. You can control your orb-shooting cannon with your computer mouse, the WASD Keys, or the QZSD Keys. In 2 Player Mode, the left-hand player uses the WASD Keys while the right-hand player uses the Arrow Keys. One player can also opt to use the mouse.
Before the play begins, you can choose a ‘spell’ that is automatically cast when you reach a certain level of ‘Mana’ (As well as scoring points, you also earn Mana when creating / eliminating groups of orbs). These spells can include freezing your opponent, or clearing extra orbs etc. Enjoy the crazy matching action!
