How to Enable Dwell Clicking

The dwell click toolbar (shown above) allows a user to left click, double click, drag and right click by holding the cursor still over an icon or button, hence the term dwell click. The Dwell Clicking feature is fully compatible with all virtual keyboards and other Windows based accessibility features. While this method of clicking does take some getting use to, once a user is experienced and has all their preferences set it becomes second nature.
The first step is to enable dwell clicking from the SmartNAV software; this can be done two ways:
1.
2.

After you enable the dwell clicking toolbar you should see the actual toolbar pop up.
It will look like this:
Please note that while the dwell clicking toolbar is programmed to Always Be on Top not all programs adhere to this guideline and it is possible for the toolbar to pop under a window. If you do not see the toolbar after you have clicked and enabled dwell clicking from within the SmartNAV software, check your windows task bar and verify it is running, then minimize all programs and it will appear.

Configuring the Toolbar

As noted above the basic concept of dwell clicking is that you move the cursor over the item you want to 'click', and the dwell click software automatically does the mouse clicking for you. However for maximum comfort and effectiveness there are several configuration options and features that should be known about before starting to use the software.
Configuring the Dwell Click Toolbar
To open the Dwell Clicking Options box, click on the sixth button from the left on the Dwell Clicking tool bar. It has a hammer & wrench on it. A pop-up box will open which allows you to adjust how long you must hold the cursor in one position before the system clicks, and how much movement you are allowed to make while trying to hold the cursor still.

    Click Time slider bar
The Click Time setting is the amount of time you must hold still before the software will produce a click. This slider bar allows you to set the Dwell Click time interval from 0.2 to 2 seconds for maximum control and comfort. Click time is also shown graphically in a green bar to the right of the Click Time slider bar.
    Movement Threshold slider bar
Some users may have trouble holding the pointer motionless for the entire dwell time and the movement threshold slider allows a user to compensate for minor movement by allowing a dwell click to occur as long as the cursor movement stays within the movement threshold for the dwell click time. This essentially increases the amount of movement the program will ignore before performing a click. This slider bar allows you to adjust the Movement Threshold from 2 pixels to 20 pixels. The Movement Threshold is also shown as a red target to the right of the Movement Threshold slider bar.
    Click Sound check box
When this box is checked, the system will produce a clicking sound when ever a Dwell Click is registered.
    Button Bar size selector
Use this menu to change the size of the Dwell Clicking button bar.

Pausing Dwell Click
A necessary feature of the Dwell Click software is the ability to easily turn it on and off. The Dwell Click software is active every time the pointer comes to rest, once the predetermined dwell time is up, a click will occur. This can lead to unintentional clicks while the SmartNAV user is doing something away from their computer, as the pointer will continue to move the mouse pointer and perform unintended clicks.
Therefore, the pause/active button (shown at right) which is the button furthest to the left of the toolbar is included to turn dwell clicking on and off. When the button is green, dwell clicking is on for the entire screen, when the button is red, only the red button is dwell sensitive. This allows the dwell toolbar to be un-paused by simply dwelling on the red circle.

What kind of click do you want to perform today?

The Dwell toolbar gives you the option to (in order of appearance); Pause Dwell Clicking, Single Click, Double Click, Drag, Right Click, change Dwell Clicking options, Close Dwell Clicking, and move/drag the Dwell Clicking button/tool bar to another location. We have already discussed what the pause and dwell clicking options buttons do and will now discuss the different clicking options.
Dwell Clicking button Color Codes
Each different click option on the dwell toolbar has three different states that it can be in:

    Unselected
The function represented by this button has not been selected as either the default or a single use action and will not be performed.
    Green
If an icon on the dwell toolbar is represented by this button then it has been selected for a single use action and will only be performed once.
    Grayed out
The function represented by this button has been selected as the default action.

Locking a Dwell Clicking function
When you start the Dwell Clicking application, you will notice that the single left click button is grayed out. This indicates that Single Left Click is the default/locked function. This means that when you dwell on an object with this button locked, the system will produce a single left click.
To lock another button in order to continuously double click, right click, or drag; highlight that button, move off of it for a second and click on it again. When the button turns gray, you know it has been locked and will now be the default action.
If the button is green then it will perform the clicking function only once and then after you have performed this action, clicking will revert back to the locked (grayed out) button.
Lets assume you want to select a right single click, the you would simply move the cursor over top of the symbol that represents the right single click (shown at right) and wait for a second or two (remember the dwell time is adjustable) until the right click is automatically selected. Then you can move the cursor over any item on the screen and wait and a right single click action will occur at that position.
To change the mouse action to a double left click, simply move the cursor over top of the symbol that represents the double left click and wait a second until it is selected, remember if it is grayed out then it will be the default, if it is green then it will only be performed once. Then as before, move the cursor over any spot on the screen and after a moment a double left click will occur.
Each function represented on the Dwell Clicking button bar can be locked (grayed out) for continuous use.
Single Click button
The second button (shown at right) looks like a single cursor arrow. This button is used for single left clicking. When this button is green, the system will single click the next time you dwell on an object. When this button appears gray, it is locked and you may single click continuously without highlighting the button each time.

Double Click button
The third button (shown at right) looks like two overlapped cursor arrows, and is used for double clicking. When this button is green, the system will double click the next time you dwell on an object. When this button appears gray, it is locked and you may double click continuously without highlighting the button each time.

Drag button
The fourth button (shown at right) looks like a cursor arrow connected to three dots, and is used for dragging. When this button highlights, the system will allow you to drag the next time you dwell on an icon. When this button appears gray, it is locked and you may drag continuously without highlighting the button each time.

Right Click button
The fifth button (shown at right) looks like a mouse with the right click button shaded. When this button highlights, the system will right click the next time you dwell on an icon. When this button appears gray, it is locked and you may right click continuously without highlighting the button each time.

Still More Buttons

Close Button
The seventh button (shown at right) displays an X-box. Click on this button to close the Dwell Clicking application.

Move Toolbar button
The eighth button (shown at right) furthest to the right of the toolbar shows four arrows. This button is used to drag the dwell clicking toolbar. To drag the toolbar; highlight the drag button, click on the Toolbar Dragging button and move to the desired location.
